ARRL Sweepstakes Reply
by AJ2W on November 16, 2003 Mail this to a friend!
Noticed that this weekend ARRL SSB Sweepstakes
Contest did not have a Frequency Window to stay
clear of, so Non-Contesters could operate without QRM.
Contesters were operating everywhere from the low
to high end of the SSB portion on all bands.

Does anyone think having a 'Stay Clear' of Frequency
Window would be a good idea for All contests ?

Thanks for your comments.

73, Larry AJ2W

There were absolutely no contest operators on the 17m and 12m phone bands, very likely few, if any on 160m phone, and none on the CW or data band segme, nts.

Yes, an event like Sweepstakes Phone does tend to fill up all the usable space on the bands allocated to the contest. Even so, during the contest I heard a number of other operations, including nets, ragchews and other casual, non-contest operations.

Just remember that big contests like this are only a few weekends each year. Your best bet for avoiding conflict is to choose a band or mode where the contesters aren't, put up with the increased QRM, or simply join in on all the contesting fun.

Are you suggesting that the hundreds (thousands?) of contesters have less right to the band than SSTVers or ragchewers or anyone else?

If the band were full of ragchewers would you recommend to set aside a space for contesters?
