The cluster system was originally designed and built for contesting. DX'ers are welcome to use it when it's not busy with contesting spots.
Having said that, I'd never miss it if the whole thing was dismantled, and let radiomen be radiomen again!

It's used for chatting and posting for sale messages as well. No DX there...

Because it is a tool. People trying to work all sections can use it to find the ones they need. I remember back in the beginning of clusters when connection by rf was the only way. The sign-on message had something like this in it: "Hi....Welcome to the K5xxx DX and Contest packet cluster.....etc."
If you do not want to see stateside spots....filter them out.

Well, 2 things I really take issue with:
1] Participants in some of the contests which don't allow spotting are still spotting.
2] Some W6's who I won't name are spotting THEMSELVES in some of the contests. I always thought one should call CQ or hunt and pounce to get contacts, spotting one's self to get contacts is beyond dumb.
I suppose little can be done about it.

Some of us do not use the packet cluster or lists for any reason, believing that to do so makes the "thrill of the chase" unchallenging.
