When to stop running? Reply

Assuming you are operating single-radio/not-assisted...when do you decide to switch from CQing to S&P/mult hunting? Do you use a minimum rate, propogation expectations (oh, it's time for Asia to start coming in on 15...) or?

If you've operated SO2R, have you found that this choice is moot because you are always doing both or do you find you need to stop CQing in order to be as effective as possible during mult hunting?

K1IR: It depends. If you are achieving your target multipliers for the stage of the contest that you are at, then you decide based solely on how you can get a higher rate. If you are behind on mults, then you have to take time to S&P for mults.

Do you use a minimum rate, propogation expectations (oh, it's time for Asia to start coming in on 15...) or?

K1IR: I use the target performance numbers that are posted in front of my nose for the entire contest. They are based on a combination of my previous performances, competitive history, plus or minus my guesses about what the current contest conditions will allow. The key is knowing what short-term rates you need to be achieving to be successful in the long run. The answer is a whole lot different at 0800z than at 1200z . . .

If you've operated SO2R, have you found that this choice is moot because you are always doing both or do you find you need to stop CQing in order to be as effective as possible during mult hunting?

K1IR: Simplify your thinking to just having a second receiver. Maybe you don't actually work guys on the second rig. You just use it to figure out where the action is - and go there when the potential for more Q's or mults looks good.
