Use the narrow SSB filter, not Hi-Fi, but cuts the nearby QRM down to manageable levels. I don't what the model/version is for the kenwood you have. For the TS120,TS130, TS690 etc use the YK88SN.
I use a TS940, and use the up/lo bandpass cut filters to arrive at pretty much the same result. Having played with a IC756pro, setting it up at 1.8Khz yield the same result.
The other tiny bit of help is to leave the notch filter turned on in SSB mode, it cuts out a tiny bit of noise and doesn't affect intelligibility. This is cutting straws - but everything helps in my mind.
