After working the ARRL DX CW contest this past weekend, I was left a little confused on a few of the exchanges I received from DX stations. Mainly the use of cut numbers in the power settings. Obviously K/KW is 1000w and 1TT is 100, but a few stations sent this exchange "5NN NN" These were large stations with huge signals, were they really sending me 99 watts?
Thanks,
Eric

I wouldn't rule it out. At least one station was indeed sending 99 watts. There were others sending 5NN NNN (999 watts) though.

Ya right. I heard and logged a number of those as well. If those guys were running anything less than a kw I should hang up my license. I certainly can't get a signal like that with 100w to Europe. :)

It is realy not that critical!
NN or K or KW or 1TT are just contest exchange numbers
due to the rules!
If someone sending NN OK!
I think at least 75% of those transmitted K or KW
have been using between 1500W and some more KWs.
Also we ALL are giving all reports 599 even if we just bearly copiing the station and asking him many times to repeat the details!!!
These are still not so critical things!
The most critical is using 2 or more antennas for diferent directions each with separate KW or more amplifiers transmitting all at the same time!!!!!!
Every licensed station has a limit of OUTPUT POWER!
So where are the resctrictions for them?
If you received a single character of QSO wrong you
are bounded with minus points and minus 2 or 3 good QSOs. If you have too much percentage of mistakes you
can be disqualified from the results. So restrictions are only on receive.
ON TRANSMITT YOU CAN DO, WHAT YOU WANT AND NOTHING HAPPEN!
So that is the reason I am not contesting any more!
This is not a hobby any more!
