I would like to get started contesting and noticed that numerous codes are used. Is there a list that tells what the numbers mean? I was told that it has to do with location, transmission type, individual or club stations, etc.

Each contest has different rules in this regard. The CQ WW contest over last weekend uses the 40 "CQ Zones" as part of the exchange and scoring system. Here's a map and a list.

The best way to figure all of this out for a given contest is to look at the contest calendar linked on this site:

Links to the rules and contest details are provided on a weekly basis.

Prior to any contest, one should thoroughly read the contest rules and requirements. Every one is different; different operating times, different exchanges, etc.
