Commentary

Decided at the very last minute to operate. Did not have a chance to settle in on a frequency to start and ended up high on 20, producing a poor start. Best hour was actually the 3rd and second best was the 5th.

Very early on 80, the high-angle antenna, a Force-12 rotary dipole failed again. Last year, it literally broke. This year, it electrically broke. Was relegated to the 4-square on 80 for the rest of the weekend, although it still produced a lot of 80M Qs!

Hit the 2nd radio hard (am I one of the few remaining 930 faithful?) and felt very effective. Haven't counted, but expect to find about 300 QSOs on the 2nd rig. Just never got many runs going on the main rig all weekend.

Last 3 sections going into Sunday were KP2, VE5 & VE8. Decided during one off-time that KP2 would be the first goal, so pointed the 15 meter beams (the rotator box was in the other room-remember, this is a Multi/Multi station!) to the Southeast and prepared to CQ on 40 & listen on 15. Lo and behold, there was KP2N high in the band on 15. One of a whopping 13 QSOs on 15 this weekend.

Never heard a VE8. VE8NC answered W1WEF, I found out later. But what's all this I read about pileups on Jay, VY1JA? Never heard Jay at all, let alone a pileup on him! I was resigned to this being one of those non-sweep weekends and was shocked to hear one sweep after another as the scores were reported. Guess I chose the wrong off times. Or perhaps I was not persistent enough with the CQs to the north.

Even VE5 was a struggle. VE5JQ called in pw on 40 in the last few hours. I needed multiple repeats to complete the Q. VE5AEO called in later. In reviewing WEF's log earlier this evening, I saw VE5s everywhere starting in the first hour of the contest!

Well, it was a new NE Division record. But not nearly enough to catch K5ZD. Congrats, Randy!

Thanx to K1KI for the use of his FB station.

73, Dan K1TO

If anyone had trouble getting VY1/VE8 during SS, check the upcoming NCJ article for hints. If the article does not give you enough information contact me at:

I am in the process of putting up a 150 ft tower to hold the A4 tribander and the apex of the 160/80/40 meter V-Beam. This will be the best antenna setup that I have had yet...

Everyone do an UN-Aurora dance and I will see you in SS.
:o)
