You use them both for RTTY FSK ("real" FSK where the radio generates the
tones Mark and Space)

You need 2 COM ports - 1 for radio control, and 1 for transmit (PTT and Key)

There are 4 "pieces" involved - WriteLog, MMTTY Control panel, rittyrite,
and xmmt.ocx

WriteLog is the contest logging software

MMTTY is used to receive (decode) RTTY transmissions, and when used with
WriteLog you do NOT assign a transmission COM port in the setup for it.
MMTTY is a separate program in a directory other than where WriteLog is.

rittyrite is used to transmit and you must specify a COM port for PTT and
Key. rittyrite is included in WriteLog.

xmmt.ocx is used to let WriteLog and MMTTY "talk" to each other.

The setups for MMTTY stand-alone and MMTTY used with WriteLog are NOT the
same. MMTTY stand-alone both transmits and receives, so you must specify a
COM port for PTT and Key. MMTTY when used with WriteLog does NOT transmit,
it receives only, and you must NOT specify a transmit COM port.

Don AA5AU has an excellent tutorial on all this on his website.

MMTTY FSK vs Rttyrite FSK, is there an advantage to one method over the
other?
(one radio, one computer))
