No you did nothing wrong. I have used Phillystran for yagi truss for years,, 
and When I took my Hi Gain Discovery 3 element down  , I observed the exact 
description of compressed. deformed outer jacket you described. There were 
numerous ICE storms and the loading wires added to the weight so much that the 
antenna elements  were Upside down U bolts. And the Phillystran held.   I no 
longer have access to a Tensile strength machine. BUT what  I have experienced 
the forces exceeded the 1200 lb load rating and survived for YEARS   YMMV
