In a related issue:

I recently was reading the manual for a pump with threaded PVC
pipe connections. The manual warned about using Teflon pipe
thread tape on the connections. It said that the lubrication
provided by the tape will make the connections so easy to turn
that it will be very easy to overtighten them because you don't get
much torque as "feedback".

I recently tried some sticky red grease that I got at Tractor
Supply on the 1" diameter bolts on my tower base (which there
is no danger of overtorquing even with my 2 foot long wrench).
It was amazing how much easier they were to turn.

On a hollow tower leg, I would be crushing the leg.
