My masts were .218 wall bare steel when I got them in 1971. They were
coated with a rather heavy black grease, inside and outside. I cleaned the
grease off the outside with a rag soaked in common paint thinner and did the
same inside the mast. I did this by soaking the rag, tying it to a long
piece of #12 or so copper wire which I threaded through the mast. I passed
the rag through the mast several times and washed it out between trips. I
kept doing it until no more greae showed up on the rag. I then let it dry
out for a day or two and painted it pretty much the same way. Soak the rag
in paint and drag it through the mast several times until the rag comes out
with paint still on it. If you expect the paint to stick to the surface of
the mast, it really has to be free of grease.
