That is what I'm afraid of: wear in the brass shaft, necessitating future
replacement. Oh well. It's not so bad right now; supposedly it was gone
through shortly before I got it (I recall getting a reciept but don't see it
right now).
Not sure if I'd want steel in there, since it's a PTO and all. Not sure what
the tempco would be, but I'm guessing it won't be like brass. Already have
enough drift as is ;) (although it's probably me still not able to zero beat).

in a groove on the shaft; works like a planetary gear drive. Cleaning
and re lube might help, but sometimes the brass shaft gets worn and then
it won't work. Usually it gets worse with use. I had a machinist make a
shaft out of hardened tool steel (we used a cut off screwdriver shank
for steel stock) which never wore out and never slipped again. I don't
think rebuild kits are available anymore. It's the shaft that the knob
attaches to. If you do what I did, be sure to use good quality steel.
