Even as a 2nd receiver, it is limited by the band pass filters in the front end of the Omni VII.    As to using it in the IF, there is only about 2 MHz BW available from center frequency.  I agree, using a dongle at the IF stage is a cheap way to get a panadapter.   But to get full range coverage and to get a 2nd receiver, the SDR play working off of the band pass filter output allows one to work one band with the radio and listen to another band at the same time.    Can't do that with a dongle off of the IF.
