IMO we ARE there now. At least the technology is.
The price is still high but rapidly coming down.
You must be careful with the term "SDR".
That is almost as broad as the term "Receiver".
There enormous differences between the cheap receivers and transceivers and
the newer direct sampling radios.
I know Carl is chuckling at that previous line/statement from me.
I guess he needed one year to convince me!
But seeing (in this case hearing) is believing and I'm a believer.

I have watched the transition from analog signal processing to DSP. The
results are remarkable, MRI, CAT, SONAR etc.
Also playing with SDR. IMHO we aren't there yet. The medical folks are not
giving away their secrets.
