There are enough older but perfectly fine machines floating around with a
real serial port that you shouldn't have any problems finding one for a
(relative) few bucks.

I know, for example, where there's a Compaq laptop with Windows 2000 on it
that would work perfectly.

But it would take a little more than three fingers of Redeye to get me to
dust it off and ship it to someone... (since I can't drink alcohol of any
sort anymore)

Thanks to all of you who responded. I've come to the same conclusion, which
is either a dedicated PC or using the Mac in virtual machine or Windows boot
mode. The only question is the linkage between the serial to USB adapter and
the COM port assignment. Most likely this will be trial and error.
