Good answer Jim..  There is or there was an offer over here of a very hefty 
switch mode and a couple of those would do the trick very nicely, but I don't 
want to risk the noise - if I can avoid it. The 9420 blew because of 
something I did accidentally so I should fix it !  I do have spare pass 
transistors and also some capacitors.  And it keeps my feet warm ...

Interesting sideline - the spare pass transistors are from Newark and all from 
the same manufacturing batch but they are very far from matched when I test 
them.
It may be un-necessary, but I think I'll use a couple that are reasonably 
close.
