You will find that there are several methods of specifying CW speed. I use the
definition that you will find in ARRL handbooks, the current one and those
dating back several 10's of years. It is quite simple

Words Per Minute(WPM) = Dots Per Second / 2.4

This assumes that the duration of dashes is 3 times the duration of a dot and
that the duration of a space is the same as the duration of a dash.

It follows then that the speed can also be found from the number of dashes per
second

WPM = Dashes Per Second /1.2

So if you want to find the speed, send a string of dashes and count the number
in a 5-second period and divide that number by 6.
