Half wrong. If you have an extension cord with the proper connectors and
heavy enough wire, one would be ok. Not something you are going to find
outside of an industrial supply store.

I've made them up for special projects, here the connectors are called "air 
conditioner" plugs (and sockets) and I use 2.5mm stranded wire. Note that
our electrical system is three wire (hot, neutral, ground) 230 volts.
