The note about TT working in a new AGC design is great news! The current
peak detection method is fairly noticeable and reacts to every click and
pop, no matter how short. This can also be seen when watching an AM signal
and seeing the S-meter reacting to the modulation. Hopefully, TT will
address the inaccuracy of the S-meter reading while they are working on
this. Here is the pertinent quote from Bob Sherwood's original post:

"A brief comment on the AGCs of the IC-7000, the 7800, the Pro III, the
Orion II, the IC-781 and some classic receivers:
Conditions: 20 meters, weak signals early in morning or late at night,
mono-band yagi at a very quiet location.
Band noise ticks, clicks and pops often drives the S meter on the Orion
II, with currently available firmware, to S5 or higher.
The same can be said for the IC-7000 and the IC-7800.
The Orion II is currently using a peak-detector AGC system. Ten-Tec is
experimenting with new AGC firmware that will cure this problem."
