TenTec Engineering.

Dear Sir,

I have this morning installed your latest release, (Ver 2.055) but still
find that there are problems with my two modes of operating (SSB & Digital
modes).

First let me say that I am using a MixW interface and MixW software for the
digital modes and a Heil BM10 Headset/Mic with an HC5 insert and an Adonis
AM-508 desk Mic.

No adjustment has ever been necessary to the mic gain potentiometer situated
on the underside of the front control panel.

With Ver 1.372 Software.

Digital Mode (USER 2)
The output levels (drive) of MixW hardware and software had been set to give
30 watt PEP for no ALC function, this was with an AUX gain range of 25 ? 60
according to band selected.

SSB Mode (USER 1)
MIC adjustment on the ORION using the Heil headset varied in the range of
20 - 40 for full drive (ALC just coming into operation) according to band
selected.
Output from the Adonis mic had been set to give same results as the Heil
mic.

On SSB, switching into operation the Speech Processor (SP) did not require
any alteration to the MIC setting, a SP value of 1-2 just brought about an
increase in the overall mean output.

Installed Ver 2.055

Digital Mode (User 2)
To obtain 30-watt PEP output it was necessary to drastically reduce the gain
within the MixW system.
Would appear that the overall gain of the AUX input is still considerably
higher with Ver 2.055 than with Ver 1.372.

SSB Mode (User 1)
Firstly, It was necessary to reduce the MIC setting to a very low value so
that the ALC function was just coming into operation, even then the audio
had a definite distorted quality.
By reducing the gain potentiometer on the underside of the front panel and
then optimising the MIC setting it was possible to obtain a reasonable audio
quality.
Switching on the Speech Processor (SP value of 1) the whole audio quality
deteriorated again and to get reasonable quality it was again necessary to
further reduce the MIC setting.

Below are a list of drive values found to give full output (ALC just coming
into operation), SP set to a value of 1
This was after a significant reduction of mic input by the gain pot' on the
underside of the front panel.

MIC gain settings SP (ON) SP (OFF)

80 Mtrs 5 30

40 Mtrs 5 35

20 mtrs 5 55

17 Mtrs 8 60

15 Mtrs 8 65

Intermittently when switching from Rx to Tx with the SP switched ON there
was instability in the transmitted signal, which has never occurred with the
previous software.

>From these tests it would indicate that both the AUX and MIC gains with the
new software are significantly higher than previously and that the effect of
the Speech processor is still excessive despite the reduction which has been
made in this latest version.

Regrettably I have yet again gone back to the original software, every thing
back to normal, SP works fine and no instability

All tests carried out with ORION running into Bird 200w dummy load

Best Rgds
