Seems that the only remaining good optical telescope sites
are in the mountains of Chile, and out here atop Mauna Kea!

I have several scopes on Kauai, including two 17 1.2"
units. None of them have seen stars in ages; too many
clouds and also quite a bit of light reflected from pretty
heavy water vapor in the air. Always a very wet observing
experience out here at night when the sky is clear. Only
good site on Kauai is to drive up onto the Waimea Canyon
rim road until you get around 1000 foot elevation. Then
all that must be contended with are the mosquitoes!
