Well Sarge, I'm old and grey and don't remember things quite so well :-) but
you did rekindle some neurons and you are no doubt correct. All I really
remember was getting about 8 watts output.

Some of the guys were recommending the Down East Microwave and Elecraft
kits. Those are really high performance units but unless I'm mistaken, they
require an ultra-low IF drive which requires modification of most common HF
rigs. The T-Kit transverters run right off the antenna jack of the HF rig.

I tell people interested in weak-signal mode VHF operation to try the T-Kits
because they work well, are simple to use, and are inexpensive. If the ham
ends up really enjoying VHF, they can always upgrade to a DEM unit or a full
blown VHF multimode rig, which was the path I chose.

One thing for sure, amplifiers and lots of aluminum placed way up in the
air, also come in handy.

Excuse me Paul I run my TT 1210 2m transverter with the hf rig at power
setting at about 12w and have used it a lot. When the band is open it's
a lot of fun attempting contacts. The manual says check the hf rig into
a 50 ohm dummy load for power between between 4 and 20w and that between
5 and 10watts should be sufficient, I chose 12. I love the little
xverter and might make more contacts with a small external amp and beam
antenna but that might be tried later. Mac

The TT transverter kits are wonderful and will work well with any HF rig
that you can power down to 5 watts or less output.

The 2M kit is substantially easier to build than the 6M transverter.
IMHO.
