The reason folks were impressed at the time, is that filter design could not
be done economically on computers, and crystal filter designs were not up to
the square shape of the Collins mechanical.
Remember when Collins came out with the mechanical, most ham receivers only
had a single crystal, and a "phasing" control in the IF. Ceramic filters were
not on the scene either for the lower cost approach.
