Okay, I'm going to list the most likely causes, not necessarily in the
order of likelihood:

Age/operator malfunction (wrong band, tuning, volume control, etc),
batteries (changed at some point but correlation to the 'fix' not noted),
superstition (and volume control was left turned low; radios will still
often 'hiss' from the speaker in this state BUT but some outside
stimulus/event kicked this little episode off, like maybe the city
working on the light pole on the corner).

I would pretty much negate any sort of actual RF/RFI source blanking
the radio.

Now, this is my opinion based on observing human nature in non-technical
persons.

A strong RF source likely sent the front end and maybe even the IF into
saturation to produce a condition where nothing was received.  I would
judge this to be classic for RF overload.  Heaven knows what the strong RF
source might have been.  Too bad you didn't have a spectrum analyzer.
Also, the radio inside, being inside, likely received far less of the local
strong RF source and its front end filtering, shielding, was likely much
better than the battery operated portables.
