Also, I would be curious what the negative side of this output 
is referenced or tied to - gen chassis or perhaps floating?

The other concern would be any/how much ripple - it could 
be considerably higher/different freq than the usual 60/120 Hz 
AC mains ripple we are used to (sort of like automotive 
alternator whine given the technology used on this gen!) if 
this output is used to power 12 V gear through the use of
an accompanying battery (or something, like a battery, 
placed across the battery-charging output to act as 
protective 'ballast' given this output's characteristics).
