I just wanted to agree with the remarks Lawrence made in reference to Linux
development
versus Windows. As a developer, it is nice to be able to get lots of free
help/advice
from the Linux community. With Microsoft, you get to pay for the various
development
kits and for developer support. While their Developer Network keeps you
supplied with
quarterly updates to most of their developer tools, it isn't cheap.
Linux is also much faster than Windows on any machine I've ever used. Runs
faster and
boots faster too. I didn't find the Win95 installation to be the smooth plug
n'play
experience that is advertised. Installing the Linux (Slackware distribution) on
the
same machine went much smoother. From what I hear, the Red Hat is the most user
friendly
of the Linux distributions. My advice is to give it a try - it really isn't any
worse
than installing any flavor of Windows. I run both on the same machine with no
problem.
If you have one of the older "slower" machines, definately give it a try -
you'll
be suprised at what the old dog can do!
This seems to be the chicken and egg situation - we need more ham applications
to get
more people to adopt Linux. Maybe some offers of help in getting packages like
CT
ported to Linux would help.
