I thought Barry's note was just addressed to me.  Here's my reply, for completeness:

"Barry, that battle was fought and over a long time ago.  I don't think that phone ops appreciate the idea that the lack of spots on their mode is out of some adherence to principle.  That's one reason why I find the recent ARRL decision so misbegotten - it will hand the advantage to those runners who have the resources, economic or technical, to be sure that they get spotted wall-to-wall.  Maybe I should think of hiring out as a spot broadcaster.

There's still nothing in the rules that say you *have to* use spots, which is why I also vehemently oppose rule changes to remove the distinction between Assisted and Unassisted."
