Also pick a band to be on that is not wide open into the states. Marginal conditions would knock the pile down a LOT. OR also lower their own power, less people that can hear them, the less that might be calling.

You are right - SS is going to pose problems for a new contester being a
rare mult.

The ONE thing to do would be to start running right from the start. That
way, they can start to (slowly) build a log with several hundred Q's, and
proceed at a leisurely pace during the whole contest.
When a new mult shows up on Sunday afternoon, when *everyone* if looking
for them is like getting hit with a double whammy. Being a needed mult AND
a new Q for those that already have the mult, but are looking for new
stations to work.

Granted, with increased activity, there seems to be a lot more Q's still
available on Sunday, but start running from the start of the contest would
be the best advice.
Everyone seems to want a sweep - this is the best way to make it happen for
most.

(should be) incumbent upon you to do mostly S&P.

That being said, we all started somewhere, so how to get experience without
running?

SS is probably the worst contest for a rare multiplier neophyte/budding
contester to hone their pileup management skills in.

Much better to practice those skills in other contests where you won't be
super rare.

YMMV

Mike VE9AA *notice I said mostly. Sometimes you cannot control the idiots
who call incessantly, however you can choose to ignore them.

VY1CQ was on sunday evening on 40. The pileup was a *mess.*

It would be nice if the guys who operate from VE8 or VY1 would just go
around

and call stations. Since VY1AAA and VY1JA are gone we are left with
stations

that aren't really seasoned contesters. They seem to get flustered pretty

easily. They would probably have a much better rate doing S&P.Jeff KU8E
