There is an aspect to all of this that is over looked.

Technology = MONEY

With additional technology, the 'price of admission" gets higher and higher. 
This is especially egregious with multi's, but is true in SO classes as well. 
The same few "technologically advanced" (read expensive) stations dominate 
contest after contest.

And then inevitably we get the "why aren't young people interested in 
contesting thread", and it gets blamed on awards and LOTW ? Incredible.
