There are two standard serial cables. One is a
"straight-through" cable, the other is a "modem
eliminator" cable. You want the former.
You can use your multimeter to see if you have
continuity on all required pins. A quick google
search yields this nice diagram:

I didn't check for accuracy, but if your cable has
the receive and transmit data reversed, you have
the wrong cable.
I presume that you are using a "real" CT-17, and
that it is powered properly.

Is the address set correctly in the software? I don't know what it is
for the 756Pro, the ProII is 64 hex.
There's nothing special about the cable.
