The OpenLogger (as my dream logging program is now being called) has
a web site and now a discussion board, we are still working to get
an e-mail reflector. I have received many supporting and interesting
e-mail messages since I first brought up the idea on here and I thank
everyone who has taken the time to send me their thoughts. I am
sorry I haven't had the time to respond to each of you directly, but
with all the contests over the last month I'm sure you can understand.
Its amazing what you can get done on a long contest-free weekend with
lousy weather though. So far this weekend I have pretty much completely
rearranged the architecture section of the web site. It now shows a
more logical breakdown of what the logger should do and how the
functionality may be divided to meet the goals of this project. I have
also specifically listed some big areas that will need help like in
the database design, radio control, platform specific hardware
interfaces, and a couple other things. A while ago there was a move to
come up with a common log format, is that still alive or does anyone
have the results of that effort? I think that may be a useful starting
point for parts of this project.
I have also put up the first actual code attributed to this project.
It is a pretty dumb demo but it was made to prove to myself that some
of the things we have grown used to in dedicated loggers was possible
using Java. Specifically it shows how to make moveable sub-windows
and how to control the tab sequence between data entry fields, some
things that Java doesn't support directly. Look for 'Prototype 1'
under the software section of the web site and if you have a Java
interpretter please give it a try, I would be interested in how it
works on platforms like Mac's and Sun's.

Exactly. A colleague of mine in a former life once wrote a random
number generating routine that always returned the number "6". When

I've received many messages this morning regarding my concerns using
my contest logging software on a new computer purchase with
Windows'95 pre-installed. K3AR and I0YQV both came through with some
very enlightening information.
The basic answer is that both NA and CT should be run in a DOS mode
which is not the DOS SHELL provided.
The DOS mode seems to be able to be addressed in 2 methods. One is to
use the Shut Down menu and the other to press F8 at startup.
Several people commented that Win'95 was not what they liked and they
had removed it from their systems. Common in comments was that the
installation of Win'95 over an old version lead to problems using
already installed DOS programs. Apparently they are not found
properly unless installed after the Windows'95 software has been
installed. This would seem to agree with those who said their
Windows'95 worked OK on new computers or when they reformatted the
hard drives before installing Windows'95.
One user commented on being successful using CT individually at home
and even visiting a M/M with 3 Windows'95 computers networked
together. I don't recall if he said he used it in the DOS mode but I
would assume so.
Many comments were made regarding Windows'95 stablity over 3.11 which
I was urged to upgrade to even on this machine as much stabler than
the 3.10 I am currently using.
The results look like I can start out with the pre-installed
Windows'95 and look for the DOS mode for contest logging where the
TSR's are not supported in Windows'95.
Thanks for all the comments. Like everyone else I'd like to have a
reasonable idea of what to ask for when jumping into a bigger machine.

Paul,
Right on with your comments regarding QSL route requests. After many
people started wising up I was sorry to see Lyndon delete the ban on
QSL info from his FAQ's.
It eventually became a matter of if they won't listen forget the rule
all together. Then again I can't blame Lyndon for backing down
because he was the victim of hundreds of "Why can't I" messages. Look
at the work he does just to make the service work let alone babysit
peoples fights.
Unless the Reflector just becomes overloaded I guess we will have to
put up with whatever is posted. Personally I was pleased to see a
recent QRP'er message and would like them all here. As I stated once
before I don't visit a lot of WWW sites repeatedly. At least the
posting to the DX newsgroup makes them easy to spot.
rec.radio.amateur.dx What is this a newsgroup with no following ?
With the DX Reflector down as long as it was I wonder why no one ever
bothered to start posting messages to the DX newsgroup. It sure is
easy to download a few titles and pick the ones you want to read. We
could even start a few prefixes to group topics QSL DXPED Think
about it.

In your opinion, is it legal per the cq rules to move stations from other
bands to the band you are submitting as a single op, single band entry ? I
didn't do it, but it sure is tempting after cqing for hours on 10 with few
replies. I asked the same question on our east coast packet cluster and got
5 yes and 1 no. Wonder what the real answer is?
