Geez It must be nice to have this "problem". Most of the guys I know buy used
gear and take the best rig they can find for the money they have.:)
Most beginning contesters look to the "BIG GUN" in the club and try and
emulate his station. There must be a reason why your local hero would be
running a 781 instead of Ten Tec. Heck his back up rig is a 930! How about
his amp?? OH ...he has two! lets see here.... A Ten Tec Titan on the main rig
and an Alpha 87 on the back up...hmmm Must be a reason.....oh look..his
emergency back up is an SB220! Must be a reason.... Wonder why only one TOP
TEN Devices auto-matic super duper antenna switcher??? Oh... the only guy who
makes one...I see....What does he run for software??? WOW! CT Version 9.26 in
Windows...room for 87,546 Q's...must be a reason.....Guess it must have
something to do with QUALITY......
My reason for owning a rice box?? Ten Tec is pug ugly :)
To all the guys who told me Honda was the way to go I get down on both knees
and apologize. There was a reason....I've bought my last american made
automobile until Detroit gets it right!

Comments:
What a great experience! Being a new Contester, it's the first
time to participate in a contest from a really good station. Felipe
has built a nice set up near Mt. El Toro in the Northeast part of the
island. The site has terrific shots to Europe and to the States with
a clear view of the Puerto Rico North coast. To the East and South the
story is not so good!
During a QSO in the NAQP, Felipe, asked me to join them for the
WW CW. I had plans to operate from our club station ( KP4VA ) so I told
him I was going to think about. The decision was easy, I could not miss
the opportunity to learn from a world class contester like Felipe and
thinking about running monobanders and a kW at that place drove me
crazy! The school I attend is in the opposite side of the island so
I could help him with the set up only some saturdays before the contest.
Murphy showed very early and the multiplier station's amplifier
was not working so Jose ( WP4IIW ) had to return to his home to bring
his Ameritron. Also the Packet connection was not working. When Jose
brought his amplifier, there was no way to get rid of a 2 seconds delay
between the TX/RX in the OMNI V and the Ameritron in 20m. It was frutrating
to wait a second call while running due to this delay. In a few words
the start was a disaster!
The contest continued with great condx on the low bands. The
Europeans were comming very loud on the LW on 160 and 80. This lot of
Europeans in 80 was new to me! We spent all night running on 40, 80 and
160m. Saturday morning came with big pile ups of Europeans in 20 and a
bunch of Asia multipliers in 15. Morning rates were slow due to the
TX/RX delay in 20m. At 11z we jumped to 15 with 200+ run rates to Europe
and stayed there up to 17z when we changed to 20m to run States and JA's
waiting for 40m to open. At 22z, we reached our best hour run rate: 232
on 40m. At end of the day the multiplier total was low and still no
Packet connection.
The second day was almost the same story. Felipe worked hard
with the Packet in his breaks and sunday afternoon we got the Cluster
running and spoting. It was my first time to use the Cluster and boy,
it works great. We started to work multpliers like crazy.
Like all good things, the contest finished. For me it was
the best experience in my contesting carreer. I learned a lot.
