I really looked forward to this contest, but did not plan well. A few days ago
I made and installed a new cage for the shunt feed and got it all tuned up. The
old one had gotten torn down during some tree trimming. It was calm at the
time, I knew I would need to install some horizontal supports between the bottom
and where it taps onto the tower but didn’t do it before the contest. The
weather changed and the wind was blowing about 40mph all day Saturday and
Saturday night. I made about a dozen trips outside with a flashlight and
climbed the tower four times during the contest trying to stabilize the wire
cage which was being blown away from the tower in the strong wind. The SWR
would go from nearly perfect to high enough that the amplifier would change to
standby because of the SWR. I actually decided to quit two times but couldn’t
stand it and would find a frequency where the SWR seemed better and would stay
there until the next trip outside with the flashlight and climbing belt.
I think the conditions were pretty good. I worked several Europeans way before
sunset. I think a VK called me but didn’t make the QSO. Had hoped for a bunch
of JA stations to boost the score but nothing. Now I am hoping for a bunch of
QRP QSOs :-).
