Interesting weekend! On Thursday my 26 years old Icom 756pro at last refused
to work (probably the driver transistors are gone). I have a small QRP TX
(home made) which runs Icom protocol CAT. So I decided to work QRP. My
setup was as follows: RX is Perseus SDR synchronized with QRP TX. Antenna is
2ele delta loop 15 m high. TR4Win log and local CWSkimmer connected to active
wideband mag.loop antenna. I do not use other servers. The output power was
2.6 w (precisely measured!) . I started the contest very late at at 11:00 UTC
on Saturday since up to this time I tried to repair my Icom. At the late
afternoon a snow storm began with a heavy wet snow and strong wind. The
electricity disappeared so the only thing I can do is to pray that my antennas
will survive. At the morning the damages are one broken fiberglass mast for 40
m dipole. My rotary delta loop survived. I am located in a small village in a
deep valley surrounded by mountains. We do not have electricity and GSM all day
long on Sunday . This snow storm disaster catches the whole country so the
local electricity was restored at 17:00 on Sunday and I resumed the contest. It
was amazing that with so low power modest antenna and QTH in a valley I
managed to work all continents (62 countries and 20 zones, no Antarctica) . For
curiosity I tried to call CQ but only 2 QSO's were made after 10 minutes call.
Hats off for those DX stations which managed to copy my tiny signal. For me the
propagation on 20 m was excellent. The local skimmer was invaluable help for
finding multipliers . The advantage of the local skimmer is that it can spot a
multipliers some minutes before they are spotted in the international DX
clusters which is very important for QRP work. For me it is an enigma how non
assisted QRP stations managed to work more than 100 countries?!.
