Comments:
Another major contest weekend, another strong solar disturbance freakishly
bulls-eyed on a Saturday and Sunday. Is it time to think about moving contests
to weekdays? No, that’s crazy…or is it? Clearly, El Sol doesn’t like
weekend contesting anymore.
I (K7RL) took the Saturday shift, and Tony (N7DX) took the Sunday shift. The
first 30 minutes were fast and furious - then it wasn’t. At that point, it
became painfully clear that lack of participation, coupled with ANOTHER weekend
of solar storms, meant buckling up for a bumpy, slow, SS ride. Running (limping
is a better word) was hit and miss (mostly miss). S&P ruled the day.
Sunday was a double whammy. Tony worked through the extra slow Sunday doldrums,
compounded by high bands that were seriously degraded. Mercifully, the radio
froze up and Tony’s remote operation came to a screeching halt with a few
hours left in the contest. Tony is an Iron Man, but I'm sure he was starting to
think working this contest was quickly descending to the level of watching grass
grow or paint dry. Take your pick.
As I write this summary Monday morning, the high bands sound great with plenty
of strong signals (please refer to paragraph number one).
Thanks to our online scoreboard competition for keeping us motivated and pushing
forward. Special thanks to the fine ops at W7VJ for the local horse race.
