COMMENTS:
So glad we have sunspots to enjoy - far too many years of suffering This young
cycle is looking more and more like the real deal.
But with the good comes the not so great news on One Happy Island. When 90% of
the beams in North America are targeting EU and/or AS, those of us in the
Caribbean and points south are inevitably overlooked - a normal . This is even
more problematic when running 100 watts or less. But there is still no where
other place I'd rather be in mid-February.
Started on 15 meters for the first time in over a decade ... quickly had 106
contacts logged in just 26 minutes, transitioned to 20 for 22 minutes adding
another 82, then back to 15 to finish the hour with another 36 were added in 12
minutes ... this is exactly what a rate junkie like me lives for (just one
radio, low power, no 2SBIQ). This ended up my best hour of the weekend ... and
definitely worth the price of admission.
The rate happily remained elevated for the following five hours in the 145ish
range but nothing like the 195 average per hour rate during the same period a
year ago. Conditions were simply TOO GOOD ... the focus was elsewhere for most
NA stations. Re-calibrated expectations accordingly. Even thought about
hooking up the amplifier but decided it best to stick with the announced low
power entry regardless of outcome.
Four hours into the contest Murphy paid his visit - with a noise source toward
North America (this has happened before). Went to 160 only to fine I couldn't
hear any NA except on the quiet NE(EU) beverage. Again reconsidered hooking up
the amplifier. To put this somewhat into prospective, on Wednesday and Thursday
nights leading up to the contest there had been zero noise on the NW and N
beverages - dead quiet. Ultimately the noise vanished during the 45th hour of
the contest ... but the damage was done.
The mornings are the most difficult when the EU path from the US is wide open.
Suffered through multiple sub-100 hours and resorted to plenty of S/P until
about 1800 each afternoon when EU fads on 10 then 15. The next six hours are
the traditional high rate period from down here, but with so many bands open the
pool of potential callers spread out on other bands, this too was somewhat
lackluster. By the end of the first full 24 hours I'd slipped over 800 contacts
behind just last year. Bad trend that would not be broken.
One huge plus, there was absolutely no storm-related QRN to deal with all
weekend. Didn't hear a single crash - but it did rain five times on Sunday.
With two very active multi-ops on Aruba, being 'needed' as a mult was greatly
diminished and so was the willingness of stations to QSY to another band when
requested. Many thanks to those who made those moves.
Hats off to fellow CWOPS and FOC members - you're really terrific code ops and
represent a very sizable proportion of this score. Thanks for your help!
Enjoyed socializing with the P40L and P40N teams this week ... and surprise
visitor CE3CT and XYL who were here on vacation. I sometimes forget Aruba has
some of the finest white sand beaches in the world.
Already looking forward to next February.
