Comments:
Murphy struck early this year. Old age caught up with my K3LR parasitic transmit
vertical array after 25 years. Numerous repairs a few days before the contest
made it operational but still not right. But the single driven element worked
just fine in omni mode. Then on Thursday I discovered a broken wire at the T top
of one of the element on my other transmit array, a broadside/endfire setup of 4
elements. No time to fix till Friday morning, so I did a climb to 70 feet and
made the fix, cutting into my pre-contest rest period.
After my nap I walked barefoot into our laundry room an hour before the bell and
stepped into puddles of water. The washing machine had sprung a leak inside
somewhere. So I spent a half hour mopping up all the water instead of doing
final checks of the station.
At the start I discovered the N1MM+_CW memories weren't working. So I did some
manual sending and S&P while trying to debug the problem. Finally rebooted
the program to resolve the issue.
Conditions to Europe were good right from the start and I focused more on
working DX than worrying about rate. I settled on a spot high in the band as had
worked well last year. I was using my K3S for the run radio and scanning the
band during my CQs with the FTDX101D, picking up some mults and Q's with it. A
pair of 34-foot phased RX verticals about 1300 feet from the transmit arrays do
a good job of nulling the TX signal.
About 0600z the European signals dropped way down and there was never a sunrise
peak. One PY station called in and P40 was worked but no other South Americans
heard. Other than a couple of KH6, there was no DX from the Pacific area.
Missing mults included ND, DC, KL7, VE5 and VO1. On Saturday morning we had 881
QSOs in the log, including 229 ten-pointers and 48 five-pointers.
Second night conditions were not as good to Europe in the early hours. Just
before 0400z the noise floor increased tremendously and with it came a wave of
strong European signals for the next two hours or so. New mults calling in
included 4L, 4X and P3, and we found VE5 and VO1.
After the last Europeans had faded and our rate trickled to single digits, I
decided to take a 90-minute sleep break. Came back with hopes of snagging VK,
ZL, JA and KL7 but it wasn't to be. XE was a new mult. At 13z, 45-minutes past
my SR, KH6AQ was still easy copy.
We had added 106 new ten-pointers the second night, for a total of 335. That's
31 more than our total a year ago. Our five-point total was 71 this year, down
from 97 last year. Where were all the VEs? Overall QSOs dropped from 1365 last
year to 1221 this year.
