Comments:

Rob and Dave's excellent adventure went the way so many field days do with a
host of issues solved via field expediency. It was lots of fun and we'd like to
do it again next year.

This FD was a last minute decision where we did not coordinate to bring lists.
For example, Dave brought a table but forgot chairs. Luckily Rob brought a chair
and the cooler made a fine bench. The food was fried FD fare, cookies, chips,
cola and other things that fueled the effort.

Arriving at Laupahoehoe seaside campground we found hundreds of people stuffed
into a campground that normally hosts 30. Rob managed to find a small area off
to the side with a commanding shot to the mainland 35' above the Pacific ocean.
This was ideal for our ground plane and dipoles mounted a few feet from a sharp
dropoff. The never-tested, homebrew, all-band ground plane worked well when it
worked but the mast-mounted autotuner had other ideas. It enjoyed randomly
retuning for a higher SWR right in the middle of contacts. To make it work we
had to also invoke the ATU in the radio. We ended up removing the mast ATU and
ran most of Saturday with the GP configured for 20 meters only. At sunset we
converted the GP to a 40 meter mostly horizontal dipole and a 20 meter L-shaped
dipole. We figure the effective height was 45' above the ocean. That worked
quite well throughout the night and into the next day.

As we all know, condx could have been better. A falling SFI and rising A-index
made for a challenging environment on Sunday. CW ruled and a brief foray into
phone proved relatively ineffective. In the last 20 minutes we tried FT8 and
although S/N reports were excellent it was slow going.

FTdx-10 at 100W
Battery power provided by three large lead acid batteries
20m GP, 40m dipole for 40 and 15 meters, 20m vertical/horizonal dipole for 20m.

With 350 bonus points our score = 2622.
