My wife and I traveled to Bonaire for a vacation. Only ham radio operators and
scuba divers have heard of this country. We stayed at K2NG’s PJ4G station. I
brought my Elecraft K3S and Noah loaned me his Ameritron AL-1200 amp. I had no
real contest strategy, my only goal was to have the most fun possible.
Unfortunately power line noise appeared just before the start and hung around
for much of the weekend. Bonaire is a desert island and there is very little
rain to wash the salt off of the insulators. Noah has an arsenal of temporary
receive antennas that are RF quiet however they were removed when he left the
island earlier in the month. Even with the QRN I still had a good first hour on
20m making over 200 QSOs and I had almost the same rates when I switched to 40m.
I felt like I owned 40m with the mountain top 2 element beam and 1000 watts. 10m
and 15m were open for long hours and conditions seemed good, I just wish that I
had better rates there, especially on 10m. I turn on the radio on Sunday
afternoon and discovered that the line noise was gone but I had less than 2
hours of operating time left. I was able to add another 342 10m and 15m contacts
to my log before going QRT. I really enjoyed the leisurely classic category.
While I would have been happier making another 400 QSOs I still had a good score
and a lot of fun. Sunday was my 62nd birthday so we went downtown and enjoyed a
nice dinner outside on the pier. I am retired and just enjoying life. On Monday
my wife and I went scuba diving in the beautiful reef just off the shore. We had
a fantastic time in Bonaire, there are some photos my QRZ page
http://www.qrz.com/db/pj4r . Thanks for the QSO’s and thanks to my QSL manager
WD9DZV for already uploading my logs and answering cards that were mailed.

73,
John KK9A
