WPX has become one of my favorites. If it talks, you can work it!

Since 10 was not open at the start, the plan was for Mitch to start on 15 while
I started on 20.
As is typical for remote operation, I encountered a technical glitch just
minutes before the start which resulted in spending about the first half hour
chasing the new gremlin. Fortunately, Mitch was off to a good start running
into Asia.

When I finally got fully operation, I still suspected something must be
wrong--although I wasn’t sure just what. He I was, at the start of the
contest, calling CQ with 1500W into 6/6 at Mitch’s excellent location and not
getting much response. It was quite strange: for the first three hours on 20 my
rate never surpassed over 40/hour. Never could see that anything was amiss and
the rate eventually improved (Later in the contest, Mitch would encounter a
similar situation on 20.)

Overall, conditions were good into Asia on Friday evening, and especially
overnight on 40 (although not on 80). When the sun rose on Saturday morning, we
were treated to an excellent opening into Europe on both 20 and 15. The 15
opening was particularly remarkable--long runs with relatively little QRM
lasting into the afternoon. A pleasant reminder of days-gone-by when sunspots
stalked the land.

Overall, conditions were considerably improved over the prior year. This was
evident early on Saturday evening when we surpassed our previous year’s score
just after the half-way point in the contest.

Alas, the conditions began to degrade somewhat thereafter. An anticipated second
EU opening on Sunday morning was largely a bust (in comparison with Saturday)
with 15 being especially disappointing. Who knows how much better our score
might have been if we’d had as strong Europe and Asia openings on Sunday as we
saw on Saturday?

I took the opportunity in this particular contest of introducing a new team
member to help in our M/2 efforts on SSB. He goes by the handle
"Robby" and is only useful as a phone operator. I brought him in to
help with situations when my remote-control connection to the station degrades
periodically contributing to problems with transmitted audio (drop-outs,
distortion). When things are ideal on the cloud, Robby isn’t really needed.
But when the vagueries of the Internet intervene, that’s when Robby really
shines.

The problem is, Robby is a typical ham: somewhat of a nerd. Even antisocial at
times. He seldom shows much emotion and, as a result, many hams don’t much
like talking with him. Nevertheless, he more than pulled his weight this time
around and I suspect he'll be helping me with remote phone contests in the
future.

By now, some of you can guess that "Robby" (A.K.A. "Mr.
Robot," R0BOT) is the ability within N1MM to automatically voice callsigns
and serial numbers using snippets of pre-recorded audio. Robby’s exists solely
to keep audio from having to stream over the Internet and to drastically reduce
the amount of live audio which unavoidably has to transit from my computer to
Mitch’s station. (Alas, SSB is not the "purer mode" which has no
such blight!)

Although Robby met with a few detractors, overall he pulled his weight
admirably, and even spawned a number of humorous responses, including imitation
(the sincerest form of flattery). He certainly made my job a lot easier and
reduced the stress of trying to make transmit audio hold together over the
course of a 48-hour contest.

Like recent M/2 efforts, we decided to take a more-measured approach to our
operating "schedule" (such as it was) and get some rest. We did
reasonably well—despite the allure of some good conditions. The two human
operators combined got about 24 hours off out of the 48 while the station kept
at least one transmitter active for 41 of the 48 hours. Not too bad.

We were very happy with the results, which Mitch believes is probably a record
for the number of Qs ever made at his station in a 48-hour period (just over
3800). We made it solidly past 9 million and feel very confident we would have
surpassed 10 if conditions on the second day had not dwindled.

Thanks to the many operators we contacted, and especially the casual
ops—especially late on Sunday afternoon—who called in not knowing what the
contest was, but willing to find out what information was needed to help us in
our quest.

73, Tony (N7DX) with Mitch (K7RL)
