Comments:

I checked my 30/40 vertical early in the morning. High SWR. I had been
suspicious that someone ran over the coax. So it looks like no good antenna to
use during the 1300Z session. I was on 30M and by chance checked to see if the
SteppIR 18e would work on 40. Ha - once in a hundred times is did, so I gave it
a try. I had been having Flex PGXL problems where the LAN could not sense the
band. But at the beginning of the CWT session every thing worked!

What a difference using the beam. I had 25 QSOS in the first 9 minutes, an
after 15 minutes had 59 contacts. This is the best start I ever had. I had the
antenna pointed east, and am usually bidirectional, but did not want to chance
it so did not work many western guys. AT 1327 had 100 QSOs. This is about 12
minutes earlier than normal. There were still plenty of spots left and it
looked like good activity, but things were slowing to 2-3 a minute. At 1338 had
133 contacts, but now I was having to call CQ a lot. So S&P from 1341-1351.
This was not too productive and the rate was noticeably slower. Perhaps I
should slow my speed from 42 WPM during this time slot. Went back to CQing for
the last 9 minutes and the rate was still good.

It is encouraging that there was a good level of activity.

Headed outside to check the 30/40 vertical's coax. I made good progress since
last week on the 80 meter 4 square and have about 30 radials, 90 connections and
soldering to do. Then I will add a couple outer radials that I left off so I
had an entrance for the mower. There is still a lot to do, but it is not
overwhelming. I wish I had a lot of feedline because I could put the 40 meter
vertical right in the middle of 2 miles of wire and see what happens. It was a
good week because we saw all the grandkids, and had some spend the night.
