Comments:
Surviving on the low bands with dipoles and LP amidst all the kilowatts and
yagis takes a special kind of stubbornness (some might say
"stupidity"), but I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. My one
advantage is that operating remote from Japan means that the low bands are open
during my daytime, so I don't have to stay up all night (unless I want to
operate 20 and above). Since my high band antenna is a low yagi fixed west, I
chose to operate only 40-160.
I mainly focused on 40 but I discovered that 80 and 160 were jumping when 40 was
not producing, so I spent quite a bit of time on those bands too. Actually, I
have less of a disadvantage on 80 and 160 than I do on 40, so I probably should
have concentrated on 80 or 160. Unfortunately, there are no SB LP categories in
this contest, so I will probably submit this score as SOABLP, but I might go
with SB40 again where I have to be ranked with the HP guys.
Conditions were really good this year on the low bands. 160 was outstanding and
I worked more countries there than I normally work in the 160 contests. That
was a surprise.
South American stations were plentiful this time, as were ZL and VK on 40 and
80. It was amazing to work a weak JH4UYB on 80 on the first call. He always
hears me, in contrast to the louder JA3YBK who almost never hears me. I guess
their urban QTH must be noisy. Only two JAs worked on 40 and one on 80. I had
plans to activate 7J1AAI from my friend JH1GTV's QTH, but he didn't get a chance
to put up the 80 meter antenna, so I had to change my plans and operate from
home. That might have been for the best, since I didn't hear much activity from
Japan on 80 (or 40).
