Comments:

We were watching the long range weather forecast all week as it went from rain,
to thunderstorms to finally suggesting a clear, storm free, Saturday. Then
Saturday came and it changed again suggesting a thunderstorm sometime during
the 12 hours would force a shutdown. I am much more cautions about how close a
storm can be before shutting down after getting a pretty bad lightening hit in
June 2012. Fortunately for us the storms were all around us, but never close
enough for suggest a shutdown. That was much appreciated as was the fact that
the station played well without any equipment issues. The only problem we had
was about 7 hours into the contest when N1MM complained about a duplicate IP
address and the network connection between the stations failed. I think this
was related to the not yet removed VPN software we used as one of the W1AW
stations during IARU. We had to do a couple of N1MM restarts as well as
frequent station resyncs, but that did not slow us down. The software was
deleted right after the contest.

The runs that we hoped for did not occur until moving to 40. 10 and 15 were
just slow and every Q had to be squeezed out. Even 20 was not the expected
bottomless pit. Were the bands in bad shape or was the participation down? I
think that was answered when we got to 40, 80 and 160. For the most part the
strong signals and the beverages made the QRN bearable. Our highest burst and
sustained rates were on 40. 160 meters was much quieter than 80 which was
surprising. However, working west of Colorado on 160 was not easy. We must
have called N6RO and K0RF a dozen times each and never made the 160 Qs. Their
signals were not strong in NC, but they were both easy copy.

Thanks to everyone for the QSOs and for the QSYs. Great job to the NX5M M2
team. Also a BIG THANKS to Jack, Alan and Dan for making this another fun
time.

73,
Bruce, N1LN
