I'm a kid again with my first ham ticket! Thats how I feel on 160M! So much to
do, so much to learn! After playing with balloons during the 160M contests 2-3
years ago, K0DI and WJ9B convinced us (my wife Sandra, K4SME and I and it
didn't take much) to build a 160M station. In my 47 years of hamming, I had
never been on lower than 10M (except for a brief novice stint on 40M when I was
9!) So why not Top Band like my mentors were on in the past! Well, we had a
blast building a textbook insulated base 1/4 wave vertical with 120 ground
radials from scratch (well, we didn't make the tower sections but built the
base and anchors!)And-- we are still improving the performance of the RX
beverages on our 10 acre lot here in Live Oak FL.(is there truly any end to
that?) Running Multi-OP LP during the ARRL160 (WJ9B as the call) then Multi HP
as K0DI during the CQ160M CW, they both left Sandra and I to fend for ourselves
in the SSB contest for work and family commitments. We both had a great time
meeting a whole new bunch of friends on the band! So-- not having a clue on
what to expect on the bands was a plus for us, for everything was a first. So--
I guess we now have comparisons for the next years events. Highlights for us was
working all 50 states on Phone (didn't do that on CW!) and working 10 point
QSO's as we are sure it is for every one else. No equipment problems. Used N1MM
(networked) and two Ten-Tec OMNI V's. Everything else was re-furbished (HB power
amplifier) or new (HB switch boxes and Beverage antenna's)Rain static kept us
from calling CQ when the noise was bad on Friday night but other than that,
loved the weak signal work! BUT-- didn't expect to need the vertical to play
above 1900 kHz!! Will work on that one!
See you all next year and hope to play in the SSB DX next week.
'73, Sandra and Steve
