Comments:
For many of us in Northern California/Nevada this SS phone contest was very
frustrating because of the severe weather we had on Saturday afternoon and
evening. The San Francisco Bay Area is not accustomed to thunder and lightning
and the resulting precipitation static that made hearing stations less than S9
+ 10 dB virtually impossible for long periods of time. (Yes, I know I'll get no
sympathy from you contesters who live in other parts of the country, where
thunderstorms occur almost daily, but we live in Northern California, not
Florida!)
Were it not for the club competition between NCCC and PVRC, I'm sure
that I
would have thrown in the towel this weekend well before the 24 hours I put in.
Weather forecasts Friday evening had predicted possible thunder and lightning,
but I pretty much figured that it couldn't be all THAT bad. After all, we don't
do lightning in San Francisco, do we? Well, I was sure wrong. The heavy rain
started just about the time the contest started, and immediately I noticed that
the rate was lower than it usually is from the N6RO station, where I have
6L/6L/6L on 15 meters. I'm accustomed to a first-hour rate of 140+ per hour and
so I was disappointed with 119 the first hour. As soon as a calling signal was
less than about S8 it became a real struggle to copy without multiple requests
for repeats. At 02 UTC I did something I never do in phone SS: I took off a
half hour because I couldn't hear anything other than precip static. (Next
year, I'll set up the Beverages for the SO2R station at N6RO. I understand that
WC6H had that capability -- Nice job, Rich, you put in a great effort.)
All weekend I noticed a slow QSB that routinely allowed me to catch
only half
of an exchange. If I got the number/precedence/call okay, the signal would fade
for the check/section and I'd have to ask for a fill. Or it would be the other
way around: I'd get the check/section but would need a fill for the
number/precedence/call. I felt like the signals were somehow on a surfboard,
rocking slowly up and down into the waves. And that's just the propagation
effects -- the splatter and QRM were unbelievable, especially on 20 and 40
meters. Or maybe my attitude is showing. I really didn't want to be there this
weekend.
But for dear old NCCC, we slog onwards and upwards! I sure worked a lot
of
guys in PVRC though. And bless them, where did all those MN stations come from?
It's going to be close, I'm sure, for the gavel this year between PVRC and NCCC,
unless MWA sneaks in there.
This contest is a lot more fun after it's over than when it was going
on...
Anyway, that's my bag of excuses. Thanks for the great hospitality at a great
