Yuri, N2TTA, arrived Friday night about midnight after a 6 hour
ride from Brooklyn, NY to NE Connecticut. It had snowed all day
and then had turned to an ice storm. We lost power a number of
times during the night but fortunately power was on for good at
the start of
the contest.
Yuri has cried many times for a SO2R setup which once again I
failed to provide. I promise to start to work on making this a
reality soon. Yuri started the contest with a "forfeit" feeling
to all the SO2R operations. This contest has become very popular
and it looks like the SO2R way is the only way to be at the top.
Yuri won North America last year and it looked like a repeat
would
be difficult.
High SWR on the upper 20M antenna due to ice limited options on
band. It's 1 P.M. local time Sunday and the antenna is still
iced up and
high SWR.
Well, about 300 more QSOs, a few multipliers and 500,000 points
more than last year but alas not a win. Great job by K3WW and a
few others who did not make many more QSOs but definitely more
multipliers. SO2R advantage? Maybe. I guess.
Yuri is a phenomenal operator considering he has been contesting
only a few years. Hosting guest operators has the enjoyment of
watching operators grow in skills. The station here doesn't get
guest operators that are trying to set world records but rather
the station is almost like a "breeder" operation. I have seen
and heard novice operators go from 5 WPM to become good
contestors.
A favorite story is listening to N1XS while gardening and how
painful the early years were. Chris quickly became one of the
better ops here. Or KB1DFB going from hanging around the station
for years and then getting his license and now a familiar call
in the VHF/UHF contest from here.
Next up CQWW WPX SSB. We will be passing out NZ1U multiplier
in a limited operation.
