Comments:

June 2006 Field Day for the NLI section turned out to be a lot more then a
summer picnic and a couple of two-way radios. Heavy down pours of rain turning
fields into mud, high winds tearing through tents and shelters, repeated
lightning strikes followed by deafening booms of thunder. These were our
weather conditions provided by a very unhappy Mother Nature throughout this
yearâ??s weekend event. As part of the 2006 Field Day, the Empire Contest Club
sponsored an Emergency Preparedness weekend program for the Boy Scouts of
America held at the Field Day site within the Wm.H.Pouch BSA camp in Staten
Island, NY. The Scout motto â??Always Be Preparedâ?? and â??Emergency
Preparednessâ?? with hurricane like weather conditions provided the true
meaning of Field Day and tested the survival skills of both the Ham Radio
operators and the attending Scouts. At our site, all radio operations were
placed out of doors within tents and temporary shelters. The Field Day station
consisted of two FT-1000mp radios, a random long wire and Butternut vertical
antenna. Three other HF radio stations, a VHF and a UHF station was used
throughout the weekend for Scout Amateur radio demonstrations. A retired WABC
news van owned by Wolf, NX2O, nicknamed â??The Queen Maryâ?? was on site to
supply AC power, if needed, and provide demonstrations and video presentations.
Other demonstrations were given by the Venture Crew 185 Fire Battalion, Local
CERT teams, NYC Police and Fire Department, Ambulance companies and a special
Cub Scout program with the Fire Department Smoke House. Attendance was counted
around the 300 mark with 91 merit badges issued. Two new Technician class
licenses were earned from the Scout ranks as well as a walk-in from Princeton,
NJ for his upgrade to Extra class during the Sunday VE license test session.
All enjoyed the weekend so much the invitation by the Scouts was given to do it
again for 2007 Field Day next year.
