Comments:
The extremely varied conditions made this more interesting than usual for this
point in the sunspot cycle. The rate was surprisingly good on Saturday when I
had 5 hours over 100, but it was poor on Sunday with a 103 hour the only one
over 100. Virtually all mults called me. I was lazy and did not get up early
to tune for mults and I found very few mults by S & P. I had ZD8Z call me and
then call again about 5 minutes later. I said: "Jim, I just worked you" He said
"Negative... Zulu Delta Eight ITALY!" Two ZD8's in one contest!
Surprisingly there I worked 8 each VK & ZLs.. Only expected maybe one of each.
The big surprise was the good opening to Northern Europe. I am used to a few
but this was the best opening in memory. OH, LA, SM, TF& GM called! I ended up
with 16 Europeans in the log which was totally unexpected. No JAs or any other
Asians though...
South America was another surprise. Usually at this point in the Sunspot cycle,
it provides the bulk of the DX contacts. This year I doubt I made more than
five contacts on my lower antenna fixed that direction.
I missed UT, AK and HI. Also missed VE4 and a few of the rarer VEs. It was a
lot more fun than I expected! Only one equipment failure. The homebrew antenna
switchbox developed problems which took a half hour out of the good runs on
Saturday, but I finally got a failure of the intermittent that I could repair.
Man! That had been bugging me for a long time!
Hope others will tell their stories too. Many of us enjoy reading them and
comparing rated, mults etc...
