Comments:

I hereby claim the record for the most eastern and most western station in North
America to ever operate in the NAQP........173 degrees East longitude, from Attu
Island, AK. For those of you unaware of how far east or west Attu is, parts of
Siberia are to the northwest and it approximately on the same longitude as ZL.

I was called to do some antenna and tower work for the Coast Guard on Attu for a
couple of weeks. One weekend coincided with the IOTA contest, the other with
the NAQP. The IOTA was a blast operating from the very rare NA 064. I actually
had some deep runs with a dipole at 25 feet on top of the Coast Guard station.
Actually it was on top of the Coast Guard station which was on a 100 foot bluff
overlooking the Pacific which was 500 feet away. A clear shot from northeast
through the south, but BIG mountains from south through west to north.

I figured I would be able to make 50 to 75 QSOs in the NAQP, even though 15 and
10 were useless and since sunset was at 0800Z, 40 was hopeless. All QSOs would
have to be made on 20. Nary a peep was heard for the first few hours of the
contest. I managed to get a couple of guys to hear me when I answered their
CQs, a bunch who didn't, including W5WMU, and had two guys who called me
answering my endless CQs. I finally pulled the plug and went down to the second
floor to drink $1 beers with the only other people on the island...18 Coast
Guard guys who live there year round.

All operating done with a key, no computer.....also no towers, stacks or two
radios....just the little Icom 706, which had no CW filter.

My advice: Don't plan on ever making top 10, 20, 30, 40 or even top 100 from
Attu in NAQP!
