Comments:

As the old TV brokerage firm ad used to say, ?We do it the old fashioned way, we
work for it?. The operating was difficult, arduous, boring at times, and just
hard work.
It was like the old days, when we walked five miles to school, in the snow,
uphill both ways. It was like watching paint dry. I don?t use the soapbox to
comment on band conditions, everybody who was there already knows. You have to
work Europe in numbers to do well in this contest, our percentage of contacts to
Europe was 22.4 percent. Please let me know how I can help with propagating
amateur radio in China, we have a great path to there. If transceivers were made
in China, an Icom 7800 would cost $19.95, they could call the company Icommie.
Just think, five million hams in China, an endless run with adrenalin.

I had adrenalin the three days before the contest. This was our first real
attempt at three stations here, and all the previous work on antenna feed lines
made it possible. Previous contests were either multi-single, or multi-two.
There are two towers here, and both have multiple underground conduits to the
garage. The switching is not finished, so I spent many trips changing bands for
the three stations at the garage patch panel. Kevin, K7ZS, came up here the day
before the contest, and helped me set up the other two stations with borrowed
equipment, and he set up the network which worked perfectly. Hank, KR7X, and
Mark, W7ZB, came up the night before the test, and got all the radios and amps
working. Jimmy, KI7Y was here the morning of the test with his equipment, then I
had to leave for a college class, and I did not return until after the start.
Al, K7AR arrived in the evening, and Jim, K9JF came after dark.

So, off we went, six experienced operators, doing a multi-multi at a single op
station. Yes, there was inter-station interference, at the start, we were unable
to use the 20m stack with the 15m stack, so the tri-bander on the second tower
had to do. The next morning, we put stubs on the 20m amp which cut the
interference to a usable level. We had ICE filters on all three transceivers,
and now stubs on the output of the 20m and 40m stations. Yes, we forgot at times
to remove the stubs when these stations were on other bands, resulting in panic
by me as to why there was 7 to 1 swr. The second tower antennas were rarely
used, so it was multi-multi on one tower.

The social time started from the beginning, and as usual, we made this a party.
It was good food, drink, and lots of jive. We shut down for the evening Thai
food dinner on Saturday, and the morning omelets on Sunday. Some of the fellows
brought their home projects, so we spent time in the shop tinkering away. Kevin
brought his antenna launching cannon, and we spent some time seeing who could
hit the pond 250? away with a potato. We had our traditional after contest
dinner, a turkey on the barbeque, the Champaign toast, and some great laughs. A
great bunch of folks, thank you so much.

None of this would have been possible without all the great operators out there;
we had a great time working you, even if we couldn?t hear you. Thanks to all
from Brad, Kevin, Hank, Mark, Jim, Jimmy, and AL. See you next year.
